How To Make A Great American Car: Ford Mustang
In 1961, Lee Iacocca, vice president and general manager of Ford Division, had a vision. His vision was a car that would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weight less than 2500 pounds, and sell for less than $2500.00. Out of this vision, the Ford Mustang was born. After many months of meetings, discussions and market surveys, funding was finally approved. On March 9, 1964 the first Mustang rolled off of the assembly line. According to Wikipedia original sales forecasts projected less than 100,000 units for the first year, but in its first eighteen months, more than one million Mustangs were built. All of these vehicles were VIN-identified as 1965 models, but several changes were made at the traditional opening of the new model year. These characteristics made enough difference to warrant designation of the 121,538 earlier ones as "1964 ½" model-year Mustangs, a distinction that has endured with purists for the past 45 years and counting. Recently on EBay, a 1964 Mustang sold for $75,000. We know that somewhere, somebody is working on the next great American car. And it'll need a lot of parts. Continue to www.DealerMine.com
